He must be a genius to learn Hindi so quickly–maybe he used the Rosetta Stone method! :]

David

As a linguist, I can tell you, House had to have a very good basis of Hindi already, to be able to read a magazine in that language. He was just looking up the difficult/new words in the dictionary.

this episode made me happy just because of the acid subplot. i love the way they made cameron look when she tried checking house's pupils! almost spot on how people look.

and if the johns hopkins psilocybin studies are anything to go by, lsd would be more than sufficient to stop a headache, since pcilocybin and lsd are both tryptamines

This is one of my favorite episodes, not for its credibility but its entertainment value. As a migraine sufferer, I could both sympathize and laugh at Hugh Laurie’s portrayal of a man with a baaaaaaaaaad headache! The medicine was stupid (the ATV EXPLODED? The kid couldn’t survive a trip to the MRI room? Where do they keep their MRI machine, in Wyoming? It’s a tiny hospital. And I don’t care what they say: if a person smokes, you can smell it on them even if you never actually see them smoking. The kid’s Mom would have figured it out just doing his laundry.) The idea that one email from one person would cause the company to pull their support of the med was eye-rolling, but House with a headache and Wilson’s disgust with him was worth all the rest. I had to admit, I wondered if there might be, someday, a drug that will really do what “von Lieberman” said his med would do. I felt just a tiny jolt of hope at the idea. The LSD idea, OTOH… I’d try it if I knew how to get it.

Personally? I didn't mind the episode. It wasn't quite as watchable as some of the others I've seen, but still.

For the record, as an ex-smoker, it's very possible to burn yourself with cigarettes if you're drunk or otherwise not compos mentis. Usually, it's because you've dropped the lit portion of the tobacco on your clothes or skin, but I once stumbled and landed on the thing. Ow! You're not paying attention, you're not coordinated because of whatever you've drunk or taken. It happens.

I can sympathize with the medical professionals who get irritated by medical information which isn't correct, although since I'm not one, it doesn't bother me. However, I *am* a paralegal, married to a cop, and I can tell you that the total pie in the sky garbage that gets put on most courtroom and crime dramas is far more appalling than this - and there's a whole lot more of them out there. I *cheered* when I heard Law and Order was getting canned at long, LONG last.

Serotonergic antidepressants (such as SSRI's) *DO* have an acute effect. They affect serotonin the first day you take them. It is their *antidepressant* effect that takes weeks to manifest, as it is associated with the downregulation of serotonin receptors in response to the prolonged presence of the drug. They could conceivably attenuate an LSD trip. Or cause serotonin syndrome. I would guess that the former would be more likely with someone taking them regularly, and the latter more likely for someone just taking one dose. Can't say I have any actual experience with this.

There are many reports that SSRI's will stop the effects of ecstasy, acutely or chronically, because they bind to the same thing -- the serotonin (reuptake) transporter. LSD, however, binds to serotonin (2A) receptors themselves.

I have a feeling they brought it into the episode because of anecdotal reports that LSD/shrooms can put a stop to cluster headaches (even more painful and less understood than migraines) for months after a single dose. Studies have not yet been done, but I hope they will be soon. I am 100% for medical LSD -- IF it works.

I don't think it was ever explicitly stated that it was LSD that House took. A far more plausible explanation was that it was Methysergide, an accepted migraine med that produces LSD-like effects if the dosage is scaled up by a factor of 10 or so. The hospital pharmacy would have had this on-hand, I imagine, and since House was trying to terminate an existing severe migraine, it's quite plausible that he'd up the dose while keeping it below dangerous levels.
