Picture Quiz: Green Arrow #58

Scene from Green Arrow #58
Scene from Green Arrow #58.
Words by Calafiore, Pencils by Lee

The set up: Connor Hawke has just been rescued from a collapsed building and transferred into an ambulance. How many mistakes can you find in this scene? As usual, several are nit-picks but a couple are pretty significant.

I’ve got five items on my list, how many can you find? (Extra credit for finding things I missed.)

  1. He has high blood pressure.
    1. Where’s that saline line she mentioned?
    2. He should have a neck brace. Why should the hospital have to tell them that?
    3. He’s upper torse is not strapped in.
    4. It doesn’t look like the gurney is either, since it doesn’t appear to be parallel to the left wall (what would the proper term be in an amblance.
    5. Is arms are loose.
    6. Why is she listening to his arm?
    7. ABC. How is his airway and breathing? IF the airway is blocked that thing on his mouth (the name of which I can’t recall at the moment) would be useless unless he is intubated (that is probably misspelled).
    8. Since the leg is the part that is bleeding, why is there a blanket over his lower torso? If it’s because of cold, why isn’t his upper torso not covered?
Did he lose his shirt in collapsed building, or did the EMTs cut it off.
Would they have demerol in an ambulance? Since it is pretty high on the restricted drug list, you would think they would not keep it on something that is relatively easy to steal.
Wouldn’t the EMTs be regularly changing the dressing anyways? Why does the base have to tell them to do their jobs?

That’s all I can see at the moment

  2. His shirt was cut away by the EMTs, so that’s a point in their favor.

  3. Why are they bagging him? Nobody said that he wasn’t *breathing*.

RE: #6 above, it looks like the artist forgot to draw in the BP cuff.

And neck brace hell. He shouldn’t have been moved from the scene without being in a full backboard.

  4. Oh, yeah. I’m no doctor, but I’m pretty sure that “opioid” + “unevaluated head injury” = “Hell no!”. Unless you really *do* want a reason to bag the guy…

AFAIK, I don’t think any unevaluated trauma patient gets pain meds. Pain is a very useful diagnostic tool for the ER folks.

  5. Oh, and is the black guy in the bottom left of panel another EMT, or someone with Connor when the building collapse? Or someone else entirely?

  6. He has no nipples. Does that count as two things wrong?

  7. She’s listening to his arm because that’s how you measure blood pressure, but the artist (colorist?) left out the actual cuff.

Why is the EMT at the patient’s head, who isn’t touching his arm, telling the other one (who is) the BP and pulse? How does he know? And how is the female one talking to base with no radio?

The hospital having to tell them their jobs is actually the silliest thing to me.

  8. I’m concerned about having his neck up on a pillow.

  9. I’m not a doctor, I’m an illustrator, so here are some artistic flaws:

    1) Out of context from the story I would never have guessed they are in an ambulance. Why isn’t that guy strapped down, on a “board” and in a neck brace?
I’ve had the unfortunate experience of being transported in an ambulance… and it looked like this http://ambulance.union.rpi.edu/amb3.jpg

    2) Thanks to poor shading and coloring, the patient’s right hand seems to be hovering over his chest.

    3) The patient’s torso is blocky, off center and seems to meld directly into his left arm.

  10. hmm, well the emt at the top of the scene is in default on his student loans, the female emt left her front door unlocked and vandals are even now stealing her spoon collection that her grandmother left her. The front left wheel on the gurney needs oil.

Connor’s insurance card is woefully out of date.

And the guy on the other end of the radio has mis-matched socks!

  11. Why is she reading his arm so close to the stethescope, that is going to have some bad results. Shouldn’t she be reading his pulse with her fingers near his wrist or carotid artery.

  12. The same problem as the last 57 issues: the colorist has forgotten that Connor isn’t white.
