[...] I found it on the inside back cover of Flash #170 (May 1967). Polite Dissent identifies the artist as Sheldon Moldoff and the writer as Jack Schiff, and indicates that it also appears in Lois Lane #74, Superboy #138, and Inferior Five #2. I did some looking, and the National Social Welfare Assembly is still around, as the National Human Services Assembly (I guess they wanted to get the word “welfare” out of the name when it became a knee-jerk trigger).
I was walking around all night wondering where else I had heard the name "BEM".

Early this morning (yes, I'm a geek) I remembered where:

A character (one appearance, but the episode title was his name: BEM) on the ANIMATED STAR TREK series from 1974 (2nd season, 2nd episode - I already said I'm a geek, alright).

THAT BEM was ALSO a "composite" man.
Like this service announcement Bem, who is comprised of 3 different guys, the Star Trek BEM was comprised of (at least 4) different beings (as he was a "colony creature").
Each individual just happened to look like a part of the body.

The Head was one entity, each arm was another, the torso another, and the hips and legs seemed to be another (with their own sets of "internal hands that came out of the abdominal area "inside" the crotch.
(Talk about being "grabby" on a date!)

When together in this particular arrangement they formed BEM.

*Incidentally, they were going to disband and form another entity (due to effing up a mission - until Kirk and some planet "god" talked him out of it), which would have comprised a whole NEW entity, and therefore NOT been BEM any longer.

SO, does BEM have any MEANING as being from differing parts?
Or is it JUST a coincidence?

Because I'm a geek, I'll have to research it.

If BEM touches the girl and says "TAARU," will everyone involved disappear and be replaced by the Inifity Man?

I have to say I'm a little dissapointed in the add. I was all set to see a BEM (Bug-Eyed Monster) whisk a girl away. ;)

Look out Firestorm, it's BEM!

Also 'What went wrong?' Duh, they all made the same mistake, everything they say it about what they want not her or what she may want. 'Sa wonder Breeder boys ever manage to hook up at all.

You're not the first to have that problem today. It's the same pop-up script I always use, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe it's being blocked by a pop-up blocker, or maybe I mis-typed some crucial semicolon or something. Try right clicking and see if that helps. Meanwhile, I'll post the full image in another post.

I . . . I don't understand. This is a surprisingly complex "ad"--encouraging young boys to balance their intellect, masculinity, and emotion . . . it might have been, you know, a wee ambitious.
