Garden Score
In the last few weeks, I’ve been planting a garden in front of our house. I had a very nice butterfly garden at our previous house, but it took a tremendous amount of work to keep the deer away. I was pleased that our new house was in a less deer prone area. Unfortunately, I didn’t count on the depredations of the little rabbit who lives under our neighbor’s woodpile:
| Ornamental Grasses | 3 planted | 2 eaten by rabbit |
| Black-eyed Susans | 3 planted | 2 eaten by rabbit |
| Columbine | 3 planted | 1 eaten by rabbit |
I think the rabbit is winning.

Have you tried Deer-off? I can get it (or similar stuff) at my local hardware or gardening store, and it works pretty well. It works by being noxious rather than poisonous (smells like rotten eggs gone worse), so critters usually don’t want to eat it. You won’t want to smell it up close, either, while you’re spraying, but for me the odor fades pretty quickly. Some people also use formulations of fox or coyote urine.
I don’t know if butterflies would find it unappealing, though.

As it should be.

Cuttings of human hair, or shed pet hair, makes a great herbivore-repelling mulch, believe it or not.
