Your Weekend Moment of Psychic Nosebleed Zen: Light Lass
December 17th, 2006
You’d think that in a thousand years, mankind come develop a cure for the psychic nosebleed, but apparently not if this scene from a recent Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes is accurate.

Scene from Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #23, script by Mark Waid, pencils by Barry Kitson
Ayla Ranzz (Light Lass) is under attack from the rogue Titan telepath Jeyra Entinn and suffers not only a psychic nose bleed, but also the rarer ear bleed as well.

I always thought psychic nose bleed came from struggle. the scene in question involved a surprise mental attack. Light Lass should have been taken out without bleeding. a few issues earlier, the same telepath attacked Chameleon and he did not bleed. but then, perhaps his alien body just reacted differently.

Has anyone mentioned that there was a psychic/supernatural nosebleed on Sci-Fi’s “The Lost Room” miniseries last week? I think this plot device has broken out of the comics and now achieved TV cliche status as well. Oh, for the good old days, when peoples’ whole heads exploded, a la ‘Scanners’…

I think there’s a much more satisfying explanation: the temptation to use telekinetic powers to pick one’s nose is simply too great. In our more honest moments, we’ve all had the frustrating experience of trying to reach that last globule of goo. For the telekinetic, no snot is unreachable, but there’s the sad consequence of telekinetic nose-picking abuse. Bleeding from the ears is presumably the consequence of over-enthusiastic telekinetic earwax removal. Presumably Professor X (and his successors) log suspiciously common nose- and ear-bleeding; no doubt it’s a classic component of the mental mutant’s presentation.
This close to Christmas, I can’t bring myself to mention the other orifices abused by telekinetics. . .
