Picture Quiz: Batman #658

I’ll admit up front that this is probably a nitpick, but a key one (from a medical perspective, at least).

Despite having all the latest and greatest in technological wonders, Alfred still makes a beginner’s error in this surgery scene from Batman #658. Look at the two panels and see if you can spot the mistake. (And for those of you who are really eagle-eyed — or the “World’s Greatest Detective” — there are a couple of other nit-picks in the first panel.)

This is not a criticism of Kubert’s art — as usual, it looks great, and I like the care he takes such as adding the dinosaur and Joker’s card. It’s just about fine tuning the medical details.

  1. He puts the gloves on before putting on the goggles?

  2. I’m no doctor, but I believe first his mask is not on so he is breathing on his hands and on the instruments. To put his mask on he is going to have to touch his face, which I suspect is not sterile. Batmans in the room, which he shouldn’t be unless he has a lower face mask on, covering the eyes wont do. Is the cave a sterile operating environment? The light is shining right into the Alfred’s face, not a very good view.

And the last thing, he must really enjoy his beverage having it sit right there with the instruments. Must be a REALLY special blend of Columbian beans.

  3. Should he have put the cloth over his mouth before putting on gloves and things, so he won’t cough on his (presumably sterile) hands?

  4. I’ll guess that one of the other nitpicks is that the instruments are laid out with the handles pointing away from the user. Also, there’s an uncovered cup of coffee or tea on the instrument stand.

  5. DXMachina, the coffee and the instruments pointing the wrong way were the very two things that I was going to comment on. Damn you!

  6. I’m thinking the espresso and the silverware are not standard surgical items?

  7. Where to start? 1) The obvious - gloving before putting on a non sterile mask. 2)Batman is not masked 3)Puts on his loops (not
sterilized) after his gloves 4) He’s looking at an ekg, but there are no electrodes on the patient 5) Pt. has not been prepped for
    surgery and he touches him.

  8. Hmm, well, maybe it would have been thoughtful of Alfred to prep the patient for surgery. You know, wipe up some of that dried blood and all… That’s the only mistake I can see that hasn’t been mentioned yet. The coffee’s what stood out to me initially, though.

  9. Way to not give the patient some extra oxygen support for the surgery, or to lay down a sterile field over his chest.

  10. In addition to what was already mentioned, I don’t think a cave is a very sterile place. I mean is someone is cutting me open I don’t want I stray bit of bat guano falling on me. Let’s not forget insects either.

  11. Who is the heart monitor attached to?
