		<description>I don&#039;t think they labeled people as vampire&#039;s for having porphyria, as hypothetically porphyria would be a consequence of consuming blood, but not a CAUSE of the blood drinking.

Having porphyria would require some other unrelated mental instability (or dietary preference) leading to consumption of blood, assuming once again that consuming blood can cause porphyria.</description>

For example (so the book went), perhaps ignorant medieval peasants saw people afflicted with diseases or conditions that make people really hairy, and thought &quot;werewolf,&quot; and maybe people with porphyria became &quot;vampires&quot; to them?  I remember it struck me as kinda half-assed speculation even then, but that might be where the reference here comes from.</description>
