Monday’s Guilty Pleasure: Smarties

SmartiesA childhood love, but still one of my favorite candies. Large amounts of caffeine and Smarties helped me survive my ER night shifts during residency. I keep a jar of these around the house to stave off the occasional hunger pain.

As any true Smarties afficionado will tell you, you have to eat them in the proper order. I prefer white-orange-yellow-green-purple-red.

A note to European readers: Smarties here in the U.S. are much different from the European candy-covered-chocolate treat of the same name.

  1. I suffer from Obsessive-Compulsive Smarties Disorder, otherwise known as OCSD. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. When I’m confronted with those Candies of the Gods, I can’t help myself- I can’t stop scarfing them down. I’ve been Smartie-free for a few months now, but it’s one day at a time.

  2. Those sweets (candies) that you have up there are called Refreshers here in the UK, if you ever find yourself over here and looking for your favourite sweets (candies). You never know when that information will come in handy. Also, this served as an excellent way where I felt could contribute enough to justify posting. Hello by the way, I’m enjoying reading through your blog – especially all the medical analysis posts, very interesting indeed. Looking forward to reading it all over the next couple of days.

  3. Yeah in the uk, smarties are small pieces of chocolate covered by hard shells made from sugar, though as a kid there were some quite weird explanations for what they were made of, basically like flat chocolate m&ms

  4. They’re called Rockets in Canada, and we have the same Smarties as Europe.
