I would like to know. Since a lumbar puncture is the preferred test most times, what illnesses can u diagnose with it? Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer...

Personally I thought the symptom mirroring was pretty realistic. The human mind is capable of convincing the body - and itself - of amazing things. I've seen footage of someone under hypnosis (ie highly suggestible state) being told a hot coal was being touched to their arm. In actual facvt, it was a cube of ice, but the skin still immediately came up in nasty blisters.

@Scott

I know this episode has been around for a long time, and I don't know if this has been asked before, but I wanted to ask this question. Is it, as House suggested at the end of the episode, possible to die from a false, purely mentally inflicted illness?

I presumed that instead of flying at 5000 ft all the way from the North Pole to NJ, they'd land at the next avaialble airport - Greenland, maybe? Canada?

although I appear to be a couple years behind the original discussion, I've never heard of the bends giving large rashes accross the lower back. Admittedly, I'm not a very experienced diver, but I was always informed that bends-related rashes tend to develop around the joints.

@Scott: I was googling methyl bromide toxicity and it warns that Methyl bromide poisoning has effects that are delayed. I get the impression that the delay is unpredictable. Additionally, it says methyl bromide can linger in clothing and fabrics. When Fran collapses in the hospital lobby the second time early in the episode she was back to wearing the clothes she came in with. She could have had a big whiff of the stuff just putting her sweater over her head.

But I'm no doctor or chemist, so eviscerate me if you must.

Great site, BTW, I'm here after every episode.

Don't You think that the pressure in the airplane is NOT low and that flying on a less altitude would be of any help?
