Monday PSA: Earth Day PSA

Earth Day PSA. Click for the full page.Don’t think of this as a day late — think of it as 17 years and a day late!
In case you missed it, yesterday was Earth Day, so here’s an Earth Day PSA from Flash #39.

This is rather lame for a full page PSA. You think that DC could at least tell the reader a little about what Earth Day means, or how Earth Day should be celebrated, or at least give a little information. Instead, they give a picture of the Earth and Superman (and it looks like John Byrne art) and give you an address to write for more information. This was pre-internet, so you’d have to use dead trees to write off for more information, and get dead trees in return — which kind of defeats the whole purpose, doesn’t it?

  1. I think that’s actually art by Kerry Gammill.

  2. Has anyone ever bothered to explain how superman can just run around in space without air? And he’s always holding space-conversations! He’s more like ‘Anti-Physics Man!’

  3. Not related to Earth Day or Superman, but here’s some more news I saw today that deals with comics and medicine:

Hellooo! He’s Superman! He can travel through time, stop bullets, and disguise himself with a simple pair of glasses. What do you expect? If comic books were filled facts, they would cease to be comic books and become text books, or something. They are read for their mythical quality, not their adherence to scientific fact-ieness.

This PSA is actually better than what you see or hear today. It least it’s message wasn’t contested. Now it’s all about “does global warming even exist?” – and that’s from our own government!
