Discussion questions:
1. If all Dan wants to do is sleep and be left alone, why did he come to an expensive resort instead of staying in his apartment?
2. Did you notice how nonchalantly Dan slipped the fact that he is a doctor into conversation? That boy is smooth.
3. Does Dan really think he can climb a mountain, stabilize a patient and get him to safety all in an hour?
4. Is that the Phantom Stranger helping them out in the second episode of the third page?
5. Explain the physics of Dan’s hat flying off backwards when he’s dropped down.

*Dr. Dan Dazzler was the four-page back-up comic that ran in Dell’s Ben Casey comic book. Further adventures and information on Dr. Dazzler can be found here.

  1. After the previous installments, I’m surprised the injured man didn’t berate Dazzler for being too young and refuse his help.

Why couldn’t he just keep his eyes closed on the plane?

  2. The comic book seems to spell “intern” as “interne”. Is this an older spelling, or is Dan an extra fancy intern? (As for the hat, I’m assuming that the wind took it, and Dan is in fact staying very, very still!)

  3. I think that the hat is supposed to be being propelled backwards by the strong winds that Dr. Dan is also fighting during his rescue attempt, further emphasizing the dangers. Courageous!

  4. I was going with the theory that when he stopped suddenly the hat kept going, or he bounced a little and the hat came off.

  5. I think by now he’s learned to casually slip the news that he’s a doctor into conversation before he does any rescuing, to avoid argument later. Well it was that or grow a beard to look older. Notice the rescued man still calls him “son.” What I want to know is (a) is he actually saying he bandaged the guy’s leg with his eyes shut and (b) the punchline still leaves him stranded at the resort – has he just given up hope of getting back in time? Maybe he can get some more sleep.

  6. Perhaps Dr. Dazzler is French. That would explain why he is an “interne” … and also why the women are throwing themselves at him so desperately.

  7. I got certified as a wilderness medic a few years back and did some training in high angle rescue situations. Typically, if someone got trapped like that guy did a team of about 8+ people would go in, with full climbing and safety gear, stabilize the patient, strap him into a sled and transport him out. In most scenarios this took approximately 2-3 days. One day in, second day: find and package, third day: transport out. It was actually incredibly depressing to take a wilderness medicine training course because for almost every emergency scenario the outcome was most assuredly death. Myocardial infarction: death, pneumothorax: death, head trauma leading to increasing ICP: death. If the injury affected any of the ABCD’s there wasn’t much that could be done because of the length of time. Luckily for Dan this guy seems to have just broken a bone, but poor Dan would never have made it back in time.

  8. It’s good to see some non-superhero Gene Colan artwork. The story’s weak (although amusing), but Gene’s art saves it. It looks like Colan did the ‘I Can’t Breathe’ episode, too.

  9. Notice how he’s walking like an egyptian on page four? The hell is up with that?
