This coming Saturday marks the 187th birthday of Florence Nightingale. Known as “The Lady With the Lamp,” Nightingale was one of the founders of modern nursing. To celebrate her birthday, I dug out this comic book PSA about her from Ben Casey #3 (Dell, 1962).

  1. She doesn’t look a day over 152.

  2. Women have been serving as nurses since the human species first populated the earth? To what exactly is the writer refering?

  3. I believe that the writer is referring to organized nursing schools, that is “professional” nursing.

  4. They just kind of throw in the lamp reference at the very end, though, don’t they? Might have been helpful to explain where that nickname comes from, unless they thought it was such a common story that everyone already knew it.

    The women/woman grammatical error near the end detracts from the message a bit.

  5. Interesting that the PSA doesn’t mention her work in statistics, which (it could be argued) had an equally great impact on patient care.

  6. Did anyone catch House’s comment on Scandinavian airplane? I didn’t get that one.

  7. Not to diminish Florence Nightingale’s work, but what about HER tutor? After all, that pastor started the whole nursing school thing…

    @Stellah:
    Which episode is the airline reference?
