Concerns about Witches #1

Please put me on your mailing list regarding arbitrary character changes.
Last I remember, Jennifer Kane was a scantily-clad heterosexual with a chunky boyfriend (Legion of Night). Now she’s apparently a lesbian, though still scantily clad. Certainly people come out of the closet all the time, but despite following Dr. Strange’s tales closely I must have missed the memo on this one.
Once upon a time, Topaz was a platinum blonde empath brimming with confidence (Dr. Strange: Flight of Bones and Strange Tales Vol. 2). Now she’s a raven-haired dark-skinned mystic of unclear ethnicity and poor self esteem. Changes in sexual preference I can understand and accept, but changes in personality and ethnicity?
If an ethnically and sexually diverse team is needed, then create some new characters. Don’t simply rewrite older characters to fit the need of the moment. Some of us like our continuity.

I realize that this is WAAAAAY after the fact, but having read this while perusing your archives, I figured I’d post for posterity.
TOPAZ did indeed start off as a Blonde, however, even in her original appearances in the WEREWOLF BY NIGHT series, she had self-esteem issues having been a slave to her “master” Taboo, then having portions of her soul stolen from her and then later made a soulless slave, imprisoned in hell.
When she was inadvertently freed from this prison by Franklin Richards & Doctor Strange, and then had a portion of her soul returned to her, she was STILL “gun-shy” of many aspects of life.
The other-worldly Sorcerer; Urthona, then taunted her with the missing portion of her soul and she caused what could have been greatest defeat of Doctor Strange’s career (had he not pulled it out of the fire - with the help of Rintrah, Wong, and unseen…Agamotto).
FINALLY, when she was reunited with her complete soul she truly became a strong individual and powerful in her own right.
When she changed her outward appearance, the explanation was that since she was a little girl in INDIA that was stolen to be a slave by Taboo… it was the BLONDE form that was an enchantment of sorts.
A “glamour” spell.
And she now wanted to return herself to her roots and resumed what was supposedly her TRUE form.
Convoluted?
Yes, sir.
But, that’s why I loves me the comics.
If done WELL… a writer can pull off almost anything.
This does seem odd and was REALLY just perpetrated so that Mike Deodato Jr. could draw his hot Brazilian wife, but in THAT… there is something for us all as well.
