Learn Your Anatomy with the Hulk

learn your anatomy with the Hulk

From The Incredible Hulk’s Book of Strength (DK, 2003):

Strength can mean many different things. Once dictionary says that strength is the “the quality of being strong,” which really doesn’t answer the question, does it? So look under strong: “capable of exerting great power.” That’s more like it!

In Hulk’s case, he can exert, or use, much more power than the rest of is. But when he calls on this great power, he is using pretty much the same method that human beings use when they need strength. Hulk is using muscles.

Your body’s bony skeleton in surrounded by a network of long ropy strands. These muscle strands work together in groups to make your bones move, whether that means walking or running or lifting or even eating.

Together, your bones and muscles are what give you strength.

Hulk has the same major muscle groups as humans…they’re just much bigger and stronger. On this page [reprinted above], we’ve shown on Hulk what some of the most important muscles are and what they’re called.

  1. Wait, this is an actual book? I was under the impression you were just getting better with Photoshop.

  2. It’s a real book for beginning readers, say 2nd grade or so. Here’s the Amazon link. It’s from a series that includes Aquaman’s Guide to the Oceans, The Flash’s Book of Speed and Superman’s Guide to the Universe.

  3. “he is using pretty much the same method that human beings use when they need strength”

I missed the part in biology class about gamma-radiation fueled ability to lift over 100 tons …

  4. Forget about lifting tons…have you even tried to stand in the pose pictured? I don’t think it’s possible.

  5. You obviously weren’t paying attention in Bio Seth.

  6. I think learning any anatomy based on Hulk comics depends entirely on the artist.

I’m okay with the penciller making the Hulk disproportionately large for green dude that is written as being 7′ or 7′6″ tall but I absolutely hate…. when the penciller draws the Hulk with either no neck or with a hunch back.

    I HATE that.

Where’s Herb Trimpe, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dale Koewn, Sal Buscema, Mark Leonardi, or Deodato?

Those guys are good. Kyle Hotz (is that his name) needs a class about the apropos of artistic license. I don’t care what the editor likes.

and I know that Gary Frank pencilled this picture.

  7. If it was a Rob Liefeld drawing, they’d have to add a lot of extra lines.

  8. If this was a Rob Liefeld drawing, you would not be able to distinguish the Hulk from Rick Jones.
