Still no public holiday, but my local community radio station did decide to celebrate United Nations Day today by playing music from each of the current member countries of UN Security Council.

Actually I don't believe it is Western smugness. Just look at the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child yourself (http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/k2crc.htm). Two big problems: nicely ambiguous langage, and numerous reservations (for example: "The Government of the Republic of Afghanistan reserves the right to express, upon ratifying the Convention, reservations on all provisions of the Convention that are incompatible with the laws of Islamic Shari'a and the local legislation in effect.") I should point out that Afganistan was just the first in an alphabetical and very long list which includes Germany, Australia, Switzerland, and the UK to name a few Western countries (Afganistan convinently makes the shortest effective example). It's hard to be "smug" about that in any medium. "Idealistic" maybe more appropriate for the comic.
