Seeing Xavier bleed reminded me (finally) of Claremont’s retcon of his first meeting with Ororo and the introduction of the Shadow King. Their “fight” was quite daring for comics, because they just sat across the table from one another, motionless. (Of course, the conceit was that there was this fantasic battle “on the Astral Plane”, with full illustration.)
At one point Xavier is “stabbed” mentally (Astrally) by the Shadow King, and the same wound appeared on his physical body. I am not sure if “Psychosomatic Trauma” is any more medically sound than “Bleeding from the brain”, but it is another possibility.
Maybe all these psychics are psychologically predisposed (from reading to many comics…) to believe that use of their powers will cause nosebleeds. And lo and behoold, they use their powers, and their nose bleeds!

I have a feeling someone’s going around off panel punching psychics in the nose.
