House Season Five Challenge

House season five starts next Tuesday, so it’s time to begin this year’s House challenge.

It’s free, it’s fun, it’s easy. Here’s how to play:

Make a list of ten conditions or diseases you think will show up on House. Be as specific as possible: no categories (like “cancer” or “autoimmune disease”), and no overly broad descriptions (“liver failure” or “cardiac arrest”, for instance). The list you make will last the remainder of the season — no addition, subtractions, or swaps. Put your list in the comments section.

Each week, your list will be compared against the show. Scoring is as follows:

1 point for a brief mention or one-liner.
3 points if the team actually tests for the condition.
3 points if your diagnosis is featured in a clinic scene.
5 points if the team treats the condition (or supposed condition).
12 points if it’s actually the correct final answer (or one of the answers) of the episode.
please notePlease note: If your diagnosis is close, but not specific enough (for example “meningitis” when the team tests for “viral meningitis”) you will earn 1/3 the points.

Scores will be collated each week and a running total will be kept. Scores will be posted late night the day of the show, or by noon the next day. After the final episode of the season, a winner will be crowned!

To play the full season, your list must be posted by 7pm (Central time) Tuesday, September 16th. Later entries are accepted, and will start accruing points the following week.

Here are last year’s final scores.

Also, a query. What if I’d said Huntington’s? Would I get points every time it is mentioned in re Thirteen? Or is it only in regards to patients?

  23. TheMatt:

Good question, but no. Scoring only applies to a hospitalized or clinic patient. Now if she were to get admitted to the hospital…

  24. Are the entries one disease per entrant? My first entry was going to be porphyria. But not only do I see two others have already used it, but there are other duplicates, and even at least one (influenza) from last year’s list.

Just wanted to get this straight before listing mine…

    –Mike

  25. Mike:

Your list is independent. You can use whatever diagnosis you want, whether or not they’ve been used by someone else. You’ll see a lot of overlap, especially of common ones (like Flu and Lupus), because people are looking for a frequent source of points.

  26. 1.Morvan’s syndrome
    2. Oculocutaneous albinism
    3. Gout
    4. Pellagra
    5. Gonorrhea
    6. Commotio cordis
    7. Hydrazine poisoning
    8. Bronchitis
    9. Maple syrup urine disease
    10. Synesthesia

  27. Thanks, Scott. While waiting for your answer I see someone else came up with Maple Syrup Urine, but now I know I can leave it in.

I took a different approach — I wanted rare diseases that had unusual names, unusual symptoms or would make “good television.” On a few of these I’ll add notes as to why I included them…

    1. Porphyria

    2. Waardenburg Syndrome — how could I resist something that includes symptoms like these?
    - The most common, born deaf or hard of hearing
    - Brilliant sapphire blue eyes or two different color eyes
    - White lock of hair on the forehead (so THAT was Jim Corrigan’s problem)
    - Inner corner of the eye displaced to the side
    - Patches of light or white skin
    - Eyebrows extending toward middle of face
    - Premature graying of the hair (by age 30)

    3. Maple Syrup Urine Disease

    4. Fanconi Anemia, AKA aplastic anemia with congenital anomalies. A recent case of this caused controversy that inspired a Law & Order episode.

    5. Prune Belly Syndrome, AKA Eagle-Barrett or Triad Syndrome. 95% of cases in males cause undescended testicles.

    6. Gaucher Disease: the #1 genetically-based disease affecting Jewish people.

    7. Job Syndrome, AKA Hyperimmunoglobulin E (HIE) Syndrome.

    8. Klinefelter’s Syndrome, men with XXY problems in the 23rd chromosome.

    9. Isaac’s Syndrome, AKA neuromyotonia, Isaac-Mertens syndrome, continuous muscle fiber activity syndrome, or quantal squander syndrome. Can cause constant twitching muscles even while sleeping or under general anesthesia.

    10. Lichen Myxedematosus can cause stiff ridges to form on the face; wish I could find a picture as it sounds like the makeup on the typical Star Trek alien from TNG onwards.

  53. Scoring Question: if a patient shows up with something on one’s list as a pre-existing condition (in addition to whatever he’s complaining about, that is), disclosed when his history is taken, is that just a 1 point ‘mention’ or something else?

  54. As long as the team mentions it as part of the differential diagnosis, it counts.

For example, if one of the doctors say, “Oh by the way, the patient has AIDS,” that’s not worth any points.

But if they say something like: “His symptoms may be caused by his AIDS,” then it’s worth a point (or more)

  55. This is my first time playing as well. I’m going to make mine all psychiatric or neuropsychiatric.

    7) steroid-induced psychosis
    8) dissociative identity disorder
    9) lycanthropy (aka clinical lycanthropy)

    6) MRSA
    7) Influenza
    8) Anthrax
    9) Alpha-1
    10) Huntington’s Disease

I would have listed Common Variable Immune Deficiency, since I was diagnoses with it roughly 5 years ago, but it’s already been used in the show (Season 1), so I doubt they’d reuse it.

  58. 1. Toxic Shock Syndrome
    2. MS
