Sean: Exactly! We have to look for common ground. My best friend is a accomplished lifelong hunter and an ardent environmentalist. He's my model for the letter.

True, but TR got shot in the chest while giving a campaign speech, and continued his speech -- finally finishing after an hour and half.

Oh, I dunno ... Was Teddy really more badass than Andrew Jackson? Jackson was pretty badass. He used to show up on senators' doorsteps and kick their asses for not voting his way. That's pretty badass.

I always think of two quotes, when I see TR's name.

"A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car, but if he has a university education, he may steal from the whole railroad." TR

------

(TR's daughter - Alice Roosevelt Longworth)

She said of his love of attention, that he "wants to be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral, and the baby at every christening."

@arkonbey - I think one of the other issues is that when environmentalists think "hunter", they think of someone driving their SUV into the forest and using their high-powered rifle with telescopic scope to take down several deer from a far distance solely for trophies whereas most of the hunters I've known are very adamant about eating what they kill and a fair amount of them are good woodsmen as well. Whereas, of course, the hunters hear "environmentalist" and visualize a Birkenstock-wearing professor who's out of touch with what's really out there and wants to end hunting because he likes animals more than humans, so I guess they're about even...

I've been drafting a letter to Field and Stream as to why hunters and environmentalists need to get together for the greater good (neither groups want to see their favorite woods turned into a Super Wal-Mart).

We environmentalists forget that the man who create national parks was a hunter; and many hunters seem to forget that he was an early environmentalist.

Yes, pity he was such a flaming war-monger with a rather gay taste for custom uniforms. Not that there's anything WRONG with that.

I take that back. Yes... yes, there was something a little wrong with that.
