Monday PSA: Buzzy Says “Free Speech — Free for All!”

Buzzy says Free Speech -- Free for All! Click for the full page.Since tomorrow is election day, I thought this would be a perfect public service ad for the week. I know I’ve run it before — last election day, if memory serves — but I felt it was apropos for tomorrow, especially since one candidate in particular seems a little unclear on that whole first amendment/free speech issue.

  1. Loved the PSA!

I don’t believe that Palin is ignorant about the First Amendment; she believes in free speech for herself but not for any dissent. lol

I honestly believe that she would try to reinstate the Alien and Sedition Acts, if she had half a chance.

Click on this site, for a grin. It is political, and may not be safe for work.

  2. House is getting bumped this week because of the election coverage, it had better be good! :-)

  3. Outside of the candidates themselves, I’ve seen a lot of people with problems with free speech lately on both sides of the party. There’s everything from in-your-face yelling to snide elitism on the interwebs about how only an idiot would vote for [candidate name redacted] and anyone who says otherwise has been brainwashed by the (liberal/conservative) media/propaganda/religious/families. Personally, I firmly believe that everyone has their opinion and should be able to express it as long as they don’t infringe upon the rights of others. And while I’m normally the sort to love debates, on certain issues and with certain debate styles, I will simply nod and agree that they have their opinions and walk off.

You know, if there’s one thing this election has taught me is that there really are some areas which cannot be debated because there are fundamental differences of opinion that prevent any meaningful argument. To take two areas of common debate, you can’t really debate abortion if the two people have different ideas of what’s human (Ok, you can debate the economic side of it, but since abortion is a high-profit medical industry from the initial procedure to the eventual counseling, we know which side that supports) and you can’t debate the security issues without a shared belief in whether there really is a “right to privacy” in the Constitution (there isn’t, of course, but the current belief is that it’s implied) and of course one’s position on whether one can or should sacrifice liberty for safety and to what degree. If there’s a disagreement on the fundamentals, you’re just never going to be able to have a meaningful argument on a higher level.
