Monday PSA: Superman shows how UNICEF Spells Help for the Children of the World!
From Action Comics #175 (December 1952) comes this Superman public service ad about UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Fund), one of the more common subjects of PSAs not only in DC comics, but those of other publishers as well.
Thanks to this ad, I think I’ve developed a new phobia: Superman flying down and exposing all of my little white lies. I can see it now, walking down the street with the Polite-Wife, and thinking I’ve just dodged a conversational landmine when suddenly Superman swoops in with a, “That’s not quite true Scott, in reality, you didn’t even notice that your wife got a new haircut.” Gee thanks, Superman. Can I just charge the flowers and dinner to you?
This public service ad ran in a variety of December 1952 DC comics. The script was written by DC’s PSA-king Jack Schiff with art by frequent collaborator Win Mortimer.

Polite-Wife – “Honey, do you think this dress makes me look fat?”
Scott – “No, I love you dear. That is the most pretty dress I think you own.”
Superman swoops in – “Scott, that’s not…..” Superman is cut cut midsentance as Scott becomes the first mortal in history to pummel Superman to death.

I dont know about 1952, but currently you have to pay to get into the Zoo, assuming they went to the Central Park Zoo.
So this may have been a touching story of “We can still have fun without money, so lets give it to the poor”. It doesn’t hold up to current times. Currently the story would have played out like…..
Superman – “Lee gave his money to Unicef to help needy kids around the world.”
Lee – “Superman thank you for confirming in my belief to help the needy of the world while also creeping me out about you invading my privacy.”
Other Kids – “Yay, lets all give our money to the unicef peoeple like the all powerful being who could crush us easily has suggested. We can go to the zoo because my grandpa said it was free when he went as a kid.”
Later, at the zoo—–
Zoo Official – “That’ll be $5 each.”
Lee – “But we gave all our money to the Unicef people, we had to walk here because we didn’t have money for the bus.”
Zoo Official – “That’ll be $5 each.”
Other Children – “UNICEF!! HELP US!!!”

LMAO!!! I was thinking too heavily about SuperMan/Big Brother angle, to even notice Mr. Kent extorting the kiddies.
I’m glad that John Bolton doesn’t have Supermans powers or New York would be missing a certain building. lol
The Secretariat Building in New York has 38 stories. If you lost 10 stories today it wouldn’t make a bit of difference.

And just where was Mr. Superman when I started dating that lunatic back in the 80s? “wait, Keith – you don’t want to go out with that skeez!”
