Monday PSA: Buzzy Has the Answer to “School Blues!”

Another Buzzy public service ad, and another “Stay in School” lesson. It’s a common topic in old DC PSAs, though admittedly an important one. This one is better than most; I appreciate the “Don’t Quit When You’re Discouraged” message — I know I’ve fallen prey to that more than once.
This PSA was written by Jack Schiff with art by prolific Buzzy PSA artist Win Mortimer. This PSA was found in Action Comics #167, but can be found in other DC comics from October 1954.

BATTLESHIP! BLAM!!!!!

Kind of makes me wonder what this new course is. The most logical possibilities are a) some sort of new shop class where he can start studying to become a car mechanic, b) a remedial version of one of his other classes, or c) a fluff course that gives his brain a chance to recharge mid-day.
Of course, the fantastic part of my thinking is imagining a Ludovico-esque scene where Joe gets strapped down and forced to watch educational films as they put drops in his eyes to keep them from drying out.

“Comrade! Where is ‘ar boat?”
“Check rural or suburban america.”
————————————-
“Look in the sky!”
“It’s a bird!”
“It’s a plane!”
“No, it’s…..It’s……HOLY #$%^!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!”
————————————-
I can actually identify with “Joe” in this PSA. High School sucked and was so damn boring. At the time I didn’t see a point and I wasn’t learning anything, other than how to be bored. It wasn’t until I started working that I saw any benefit to do what someone else told me to do, IE cause they gave me money to do it.
