Oh, here we go: according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiopulmonary_resuscitation, “In the U.S., [CPR] was first promoted as a technique for the public to learn in the 1970s.”

That jibes with my memories; I think I recall episodes of Emergency! where “the new resuscitation technique” was credited as making the critical difference in a patient’s survival.

And since Donald Blake is the only MD on the Avengers….

…I suddenly have a mental image of Thor bellowing, “Stand thee back, Avengers! I must perform CHEST COMPRESSIONS — with mine URU HAMMER!”

Was CPR commonly taught as a first aid technique in 1969?

It’s probably a lot easier to remove the armor if it recognizes the person as a “friendly”, and hence doesn’t activate any booby-traps.

That’s a good point. Now that you mention it, at this point, Tony still had to wear a chest plate at all times to keep his heart beating, so even if you could do CPR through the armor, would it even work? They should probably just plug him into the nearest electrical outlet.

Wait, how do you perform CPR through the armor ?

(And it can’t be that easy to remove, or some villain would have taken advantage of this by now…)
