I'm not aware of any connection off hand, other than the fact that microcytic anemias (like iron deficiency anemia, a main cause of pica) are common in chronic diseases, but I'll see what I can find.

Just out of curiosity, are you aware of any relationship between pica and pre-existing auto-immune disorders?

I picked up Comic Base in San Diego at the Con this year after much debate and Q/A with the online community. I love it. I too have been keeping readers up to date with my trails as I moved from Comic Collector 2.0 to CB. I can't stress enough home much this program has helped me out over the past two months.

Regarding Girl Genius: The collections are at the slightly larger size, and because the company is so small (basically Phil and Kaja and a couple of minions) the larger size of the comic reduces the work on the collections by a HUGE amount. It may not make a big difference to most folks, but it makes a really big difference to them. You should write to whoever you buy comics from and let them know GG was mangled, and then write to Studio Foglio and let them know as well.
