Temporary Notice

Due to the recent proliferation of comment spam, I am temporarily turning on comment moderation. This means there might be a slight delay between posting a comment and seeing it online.

In the meantime, it looks like I no longer have any excuses for not upgrading to WordPress 1.21…hope it works…

UPDATED 20 Oct 2004 14:58 – The WordPress Update is complete, but not without some headaches (header and comment issues mostly). If anyone notices any unusual behavior, please let me know. If any legitimate comments were lost, I apologize and please let me know so I can (try to) fix it.

  1. I had no problems upgrading…I was getting hit by automated comment spam a couple days ago and I ended up following this advice from the wordpress support forum:

So far, the spammers haven’t come back. I think there are a few comment spam plugins you could install too.

  2. At one point, it got so bad on my WordPress-powered blog that I used a plug-in that allowed me to shut off all comments older than a certain number of days. Since older stories don’t ever get comments, I did that and all the spamming stopped immediately. A couple days later, I went back in and re-opened it all.

I just opened a new blog last week. Three days later, I was getting spammed by the same freaks again. They give Texas Hold Em Poker a bad name, the jerks.

But with the right settings, the basic WordPress controls should take care of things for you. Good luck weathering out the storm.

  3. The storm seems to have died down. At one point, I was receiving a spam comment about every 2 minutes, and had 500 for the day overall (thankfully I managed to block most before they reached the site)
