   People say the boy scouts are not the same organization they used to be. That’s why the kid in Up was part of the generic “Wilderness Explorer” group rather than a boy scout. Does anyone know what does that mean?

   I don’t think the Boy Scouts has changed as much as society has changed around them. Their hard line stance on such things as homosexuality and atheism are no longer the norm and this is hurting their image and support.

   Thanks for posting this. I come here every week for House recaps (which are fantastic, by the way)…was pleased to see a mention of the Centennial.

   I’ve been a Cubmaster for several years now and the BSA program is really what the leaders and parents and mostly the boys make it. For us, it’s about getting together, having fun, doing cool things and at all times, above everything else…doing our best at whatever it is we’re doing.

   Anyway…thanks so much for mentioning the Centennial…good to know that some people remember we’re still out there trying to do good things for our sons!

   The Scouts’ line on homosexuality is less about moral puritanism (although as a moral puritan-type and a hypocrite, I prefer following that mode than the real reason) and more about weeding out potential child molesters.

   Now the “child molester = homosexual” may sound like more of a stereotype and myth than truth… and most people believe that the two groups are mutually exclusive, or at least that’s what I’ve been told repeatedly by homosexual anti-defamation groups…. (that pedophiles and homosexuals cannot be the same people)

   I’m an Eagle Scout, and even then it was clear to me that they were trying to keep sexual elements free from where boys are developing into men.

   I’d rather err on the notion that the societal norm may be wrong. Some others would too. Some won’t and they sue for it. United Way withdrew funding. Some public schools yanked the allowance for meeting places. I don’t care for that.
