iTunes Recommendations

Thanks to friends with a voracious appetite for Pepsi, I have quite a few free songs on my iTunes account.

I’ve downloaded all the songs I know that I wanted, but what about all the songs I didn’t know I wanted? I can download fifteen more songs, so I’m looking for suggestions. If you could choose just one song to sell me on a favorite band, what would it be?

My taste is quite eclectic (anyting but gospel), so any and all recommendations are appreciated.

  1. stars of track and field – belle and sebastian
    tropicalia – beck
    holiday – green day
never be me – blood or whiskey
    barrier reef – old 97’s
screaming at the wailing wall – flogging molly
500 girl mornings – steve wynn
    olympia wa – rancid
    gas guage – spearhead

  2. Heavy–David Alberding
    In the River–The Call
    The Boxer–Carbon Leaf

  3. Wilco is “alt-country”, but I find that category a little narrow to define their sound. Anyway, for a more somber/reflective song try:
    Wilco – Jesus, etc.
Buf for a more fun song, go with:
    Wilco – Heavy Metal Drummer

Here’s a song that makes for a great kickstart to a mix CD, or a song to wake up and start the day with:
    Flaming Lips – Fight Test

If you’re intrigued by Van Morrison and Bob Dylan mixed with a more modern electronic sound, try:
David Gray – Please Forgive Me

More depressing, but cathartic (and essential):
    Nick Drake – Northern Sky
Really, I can’t recommend Nick Drake enough. He was a songwriter in the 60s who committed suicide after meeting with commercial indifference despite releasing three albums of great songs. Posthumously lauded as one of the greats, he’s been picking up fans since being prominently featured in Hollywood soundtracks on rom-coms (I blame/thank John Cusack).

  4. I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but if your looking for new artists I just did a few posts on places to
find good music at my site.

  5. A handful of random suggestions:

    Emm Gryner – Acid
    Emm Gryner – Free
    Todd Snider – Beer Run
Todd Snider – Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues
    Diana Anaid – Dumb Opinion
Great Big Sea – Donkey Riding
Kim Richey – From Where I Stand
Maura O’Connell – Still Hurts Sometimes
    Shivaree – Goodnight Moon
Kathleen Edwards – Back to Me

  6. I don’t know if you have any downloads left after these suggestions, but if you do I have a suggestion or two.

Tom Waits – Well, pretty much anything is great, but in case you haven’t heard him before, good starter songs include “Grapefruit Moon”, “Step Right Up”, “Downtown Train,” and “Hold On”.
Kongor-Ol Ondar – I just picked this artist because he’s the best known, but really any Tuvan throat-singing is going to blow your mind. He can sing more than one note at the same time! Something from the soundtrack to “Genghis Blues” would be good.

  7. I don’t know if this is on iTunes, but I think you’d enjoy the track ‘Frontier Psychiatry’ by The Avalanches. It makes me smile every time I hear it.

  8. Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk

  9. ‘Baby Love Child’ by Pizzicato Five
‘Come on Eileen’ by Save Ferris
    ‘Rockin’ in A-flat’ by Madness

    I could go on. :)

  10. “If you knew” by Neko Case

“Red Vines” by Aimee Mann (or “Driving Sideways”)

    “Suitcase” by Over the Rhine

“You’ve got to live a little” by Texas

“I’m the Man” by Joe Jackson (not the live version)
