I thought that really really REALLY deep sea divers already used breathable fluids as at that pressure having air in your lungs would cause your chest to implode, so instead they fill them with liquid. Or maybe that was a movie...

They have actually done work on real synthetic blood and breathable fluids.
Occasionally you'll see a news story with picture of a live mouse submerged in a beaker of the stuff.

Possible uses? Emergency blood replacement substitute, treatment/lifesupport for severely damage lungs, maybe a floatation bed for extreme burn cases, survival at great pressures (like undersea) or extreme acceleration (float 'em in a breathable mixture with neutral bouyancy and they can survive, and fuction under, higher G forces that would otherwise squash or at least suffocate 'em).

They actually explained that the space program developed the "Hydronaut" serum in case astronauts landed on a water world. Of course, the panel showed them walking underwater with full space suits on which more or less defeats the "breathe through your skin" concept.

See, what you really want to do is think about this logically... because then you would start to ask yourself the obvious question of why in the world the manned SPACE prgramme would develope something that would allow you to breath underwater, only to have the effects disapear once you come into contact with.... water.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure liquid hydrocarbons and elemental mercury are not the best things to put on your skin even if you don't breath thru it.

It's the "Flomaster Fountain Pen Convention" and everyone on the plane is a pen saleman, that's why they've got enough pens to fill Clark's hat with ink.
