Top Ten Childhood Monsters, #3

3. Max

The monsters from Where the Wild Things Are were fine. Max though, he was creepy…

  1. Loved the book as a child. Don’t remember being scared by max though. Daleks are #1 scary in my book.

Last year, having travelled to LA for the first time, I caught a taxi all the way from Culver City to Sunset Boulevard where there’s a big shop (Meltdown?). I discovered that LA comic shops have the same range of stuff as the shops in Sydney. Vaugely disappointed, I wandered the shop trying to find something new, and noticed on the wall a “Where the Wild Things Are” T-Shirt, the last in stock (straight off the wall, but it fitted). My wife was most impressed.

  2. I don’t know. The Wild Things say, “Oh, please don’t go! We’ll eat you up, we love you so!” That always seemed a little disturbing to me. Also disturbing is that I have a feeling I could still recite the full text of the book. Too many little brothers and babysitting jobs, and mischief of one kind and another have seared it into my brain.

  3. I agree actually. I found Max to be really scary. Something about the way the book illustrator had drawn his face…
